Olive
Harvest in Italy
In November 2005, Swiss airline flew me to Italy to do
a story and photo essay about a castle’s olive harvest for the Swiss
in-flight magazine. Writing examples are available upon request.
Style
People enjoy my feature writing style -- a mix of humor and insight with descriptions that appeal to the senses. Readers have particularly responded to travel articles that I have written about destinations like Venice, Ireland, Paris, Umbria and Boston’s Fenway Park.
Background
My first full time job at The Maui News was as sports
writer. The four years I spent in that department provided some of the
best learning experiences a young photojournalist can have. Along with
writing on deadline nearly every day, I was immersed in layout, headline
writing and the importance of getting everything right the first time – all
skills that have helped me understand what editors and clients want.
I moved to the photography department in the mid 1980s, but have continued
to write for The Maui News. Occasionally, my stories are picked up by
Associated Press. In 2004, my three-part series about attempts to capture
a lovesick, wayward seal from the Big Island won first place in Breaking
News by the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
I have written a novel (as yet unsold) and am in the process of authoring
a book about common sense safety for tourists, tentatively titled “Surviving
Paradise.”
